Social Studies
The Social Studies Department at Island Trees High School provides a broad curriculum that emphasizes critical thinking, historical analysis, and civic responsibility. Core courses include Global History, U.S. History, Government, and Economics, which are required for graduation. These classes focus on building students' understanding of diverse cultures, historical events, and social and political structures, as well as developing their ability to evaluate and apply knowledge to contemporary issues. The department’s curriculum aims to prepare students for informed citizenship and effective participation in American democracy by fostering analytical and reasoning skills..
Additionally, the department offers Advanced Placement (AP) courses, including AP World History, AP U.S. History, AP Government, and AP Microeconomics, which provide an opportunity for academically ambitious students to engage with college-level material. Elective courses, such as Psychology, Sociology, and specialized courses like American Foreign Policy and Civil Rights and Diversity in America, allow students to explore particular interests within the field of social studies. These electives enrich the core curriculum by incorporating interdisciplinary perspectives and hands-on learning experiences, encouraging students to think critically about social issues, history, and the role of individuals within a global society.
