English
Rooted in the rigorous Common Core Learning Standards, the courses in our English curriculum focus on the study of many literary genres, including non-fiction, novels, short stories, plays, and poetry. Through a balanced literacy program that reflects the need to develop college and career readiness, students are afforded the opportunity to become stronger communicators. Our careful focus on vocabulary enrichment and grammar instruction strengthens written expression; in addition, our instruction centers on evidence-based writing, with an increased emphasis on author’s craft and purpose. A strong emphasis is also placed on improving and promoting critical reading, fluent speaking, and active listening. In addition to becoming analytical readers and writers, students are afforded the opportunity to develop their creative writing and critical thinking skills in each of the courses they take. The Common Core English Regents, given in eleventh grade, requires that students demonstrate proficiency in listening and reading comprehension, with a strong emphasis on close reading for literary analysis. Our department carefully scaffolds the skills necessary to meet with success on this exam, while also providing various opportunities for enrichment. Our AP and college courses offer students the opportunity to meet the challenges of college-level courses in the supportive environment of a high school setting. Finally, our elective courses offered to students throughout their high school experience encourage them to discover and develop their individual interests and talents. Our greatest goal is to provide students with the resources to enter into the world beyond high school with the tools necessary to succeed in college, work, and beyond.
