English as a New Language (ENL) is a state-mandated program for English Language Learners (ELLs) who have been determined to have a primary language that is other than English, and who require support in order to become proficient in English. The ENL program emphasizes English language acquisition. In an ENL program, language arts and content-area instruction are taught in English using specific ENL instructional strategies. Some content area classes, including ELA, may be taught as an integrated and/or co-taught ENL class. The stand-alone English as a New Language courses are offered to students who are at an Entering or Emerging English language proficiency, as determined on the NYSITELL or NYSESLAT exam.
