The Science Department at Island Trees High School offers a comprehensive program that allows students to engage deeply with foundational scientific disciplines, including earth science, biology, chemistry, and physics. Through a structured sequence, students develop essential skills in observation, experimentation, and critical analysis, preparing them for a range of academic and career paths. The department encourages a hands-on approach, with laboratory requirements integrated into each core subject to ensure students acquire practical skills in scientific inquiry and data analysis. These courses emphasize understanding natural phenomena, the principles of scientific research, and the role of science in real-world applications. The department also provides an advanced course of offerings for students seeking more rigorous scientific study. This includes a selection of Advanced Placement (AP) courses in Chemistry, Biology, and Physics, designed to challenge high-performing students and give them a head start on college-level material. Additionally, elective offerings such as Forensics, Environmental Science, and a unique Long Island Ecology course allow students to explore specialized areas of interest. These electives focus on applications of science in society, such as environmental sustainability and criminal investigations, enriching the curriculum with interdisciplinary perspectives and fostering a deeper appreciation for science’s impact on everyday life.
